” Back in 1977 I was working in my first workshop in an old banana warehouse in the Lots road, London. At that time it was a depressingly sad rundown area, a stones throw from the houseboats at Chelsea wharf and the appropriately named world end at the other. These days it is home to Chelsea design centre and expensive river side apartments.
The workshops were populated by a group of young artists, like me not long out of art college, my immediate neighbours were a young couple who had fled from Chile in the dead of the night at a time when young activists were persecuted by the Pinochet regime, and often disappeared.
They set up making leather goods and printing T-shirts and became friends with a girl who had landed a job printing shirts for PINK FLOYD.
Nick Mason asked her if she knew anyone that could make jewellery for them. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.
PINK FLOYD were about to conclude their ‘Animals’ tour and they wanted 200 silver pig pendants to give to their road crew as a thank you for all their hard work. I was given a pass to get into Wembley Stadium, where they were rehearsing and testing out the flying pig. The sketches
done that day were the basis for many wax carvings, most of which were duly rejected by Nick Mason! Approval eventually came when he thought I’d achieved a good enough likeness to the inflatable. The wax was cast into silver and then engraved a long the side with ‘thoinks’ and sent for moulding. The 200 pigs were cast in Hatton Garden and hallmarked at the London assay office. Each pendant was packed in a blue drum box filled with cotton wool and delivered to FLOYD’s offices in the nick of time!” – Penny Price
