Artwork Background

The Animals cover shoot remains one of the most ambitious projects ever attempted by Hipgnosis. For the artwork, the team staged a giant inflatable pig above Battersea Power Station in London. On day one, the pig refused to rise. On day two, however, it broke free, drifting into the Heathrow flight path and making international headlines as pilots reported a “flying pig.”

After being retrieved from a Kent farm, the inflatable was finally photographed in place on day three with a helicopter ready to capture the perfect shot. The finished artwork combined real skies from day one with the pig’s final positioning, creating one of the most dramatic and surreal album covers of the 1970s.

Cultural Significance

Animals was inspired by George Orwell’s Animal Farm and offered a biting critique of modern society. Moreover, the album marked a creative high point for Pink Floyd, combining soaring guitar lines from David Gilmour with Roger Waters’ sharp political vision.
