Artwork Background

The iconic cover for A Momentary Lapse of Reason stemmed from a lyric about an “empty bed.” Thorgerson expanded the concept into a surreal vision of 700 real hospital and wrought iron beds stretching across Saunton Sands in Devon, arranged to flow like a riverbed.

The ambitious shoot required two trucks, tractors, models, handlers, dogs, and even a microlight to capture the scene. Initially, the team had to abandon the setup due to heavy rain and poor visibility. Two weeks later, they repeated the entire process and finally achieved the desired shot — all while working against the turning tide.

Thorgerson described the final result as “real beds in a real place looking somewhat unreal,” a perfect metaphor for Pink Floyd’s dreamlike, experimental sound.

Cultural Significance

A Momentary Lapse of Reason reached No.3 on the US Billboard charts in October 1987 and re-established Pink Floyd as a dominant force in progressive rock.
