The story begins with a telephone call in 1995, when Paul Weller asked Peter Blake if he would be interested in creating the artwork for his forthcoming album. Peter Blake has described how closely they worked on the concept. Paul supplied a list of suggested subjects for the collage, and Blake developed the final selection, setting some ideas aside and refining others as the composition took shape. George Best replaced another footballer in the original visual line-up. Blake had a definitive image of John Lennon in mind. The family photographs and Mod imagery are personal references, and the double-take of Weller as a boy alongside Weller as an adult is classic Blake: a sharp, playful moment created through juxtaposition.

In 2002, when it came to producing an original fine art print, Blake returned to the finished artwork in his studio and reconsidered the scale and treatment needed for a screenprint edition.
