Artwork Inspiration

Storm Thorgerson explained that the design needed to illustrate not one album, but Pink Floyd’s entire output. Therefore, he created two companion images of a room filled with Floyd references, reflecting their ethos rather than a single theme.

The concept draws on the recursive layering of Ummagumma and Echoes, but adds a mirror as a focal point to symbolise reflection, framing, and perspective. Furthermore, the design raises playful questions: is it a real room, a mirror image, or something impossible?

As Thorgerson put it, the composition “mirrors the far bigger mystery of Floyd’s success — a mystery especially to them.”

Cultural Significance

Released to coincide with the Oh By The Way box set, this design symbolised the band’s legacy across 14 albums. In addition, its scarcity has made it one of the most collectable Pink Floyd signed prints.
