Melissa Mailer-Yates describes how the Ocean Colour Scene portrait came about:
“Next came the meet with Ocean Colour Scene. These guys have consistently produced some amazing music over the years and deserve every bit of exposure they can get. They are a Birmingham based group too so we had a lot in common. A phone call with Steve Craddock and I was off to meet them in Harbourne. What a great bunch of people. A glass of wine greeted me and an enthusiastic Steve who had great ideas for the composition.
I was introduced to the handsome Simon Fowler, and the Adonis-like Oscar, their drummer by Steve the family man, and inspiration for this composition. He had assembled a collection of fascinating instruments, some they use and others not. We worked extensively with two sitars, one of them a bass version. A large Indian tapestry on the wall behind wrapped it up and produced the most fascinating photographs.
The canvas was striking in the strong contrasts I worked with, a very dark background and highlights on their faces in strong reds. While there was not much in the way of abstraction, it was already within the strong lines of the composition. Finally I added highlights to the reproduced tapestry using hot glue and foil. The little flecks creating flashes of excitement in the painting.
We also had the opportunity to see the guys in concert at the Town Hall and I knew it had what was necessary. The original stood on an easel in the foyer for the night and attracted a great deal of interest. I think the highlight of the night was Steve playing the wonderful huge organ in the Town Hall for the opening number”.
