Led Zeppelin Print In Through The Out Door Signed Aubrey Powell, This limited edition fine art print celebrates In Through the Out Door, Led Zeppelin’s eighth studio album and the last recorded before drummer John Bonham’s death in 1980. Released on 15 August 1979 by Swan Song Records, it became the band’s sixth and final US number one.

The album was recorded over three weeks in late 1978 at ABBA’s Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. Moreover, it stood out for its highly creative packaging. The original outer sleeve looked like a plain brown paper bag, while the inner sleeve featured black-and-white artwork that transformed into full colour when brushed with water.

Six different sleeve variations existed, each showing the same bar scene from the perspective of a different character. This imaginative concept came from Hipgnosis, the design studio co-founded by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. In 1980, the cover received a Grammy nomination for Best Album Package.

Artwork Background

The sepia tone of the cover evoked a sense of timelessness. A brushstroke of colour through the centre added vibrancy and contrast, echoing Led Zeppelin’s own description of the album as “a lick of fresh paint.”

Hipgnosis photographed the bar scene so that each cover presented a different viewpoint. The focal point remained the man burning a “Dear John” letter, seen from six perspectives. As a result, collectors often sought to complete all six variations.
