This limited edition print is hand signed by both David Bowie and Celia Philo, the art director who was instrumental in bringing the image to life.

Photographed late in the evening during a session exploring different visual concepts, the idea for the lightning bolt came from the band’s drum kit. Bowie’s legendary flash was airbrushed by Philip Castle, famed for his work on A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket, bringing a dramatic metallic sheen to the piece. The silver genie effect and the delicate teardrop resting in Bowie’s collarbone completed the surrealist vision.

Celia Philo, the creative director on the Aladdin Sane project, recalls seeing the first contact sheets and realising they had created a cultural landmark. The image fuses glam with surrealism—David Bowie at his most experimental and iconic.
