Composition with Circles I (1998) marks the first highly coveted iteration of Riley’s limited edition series, Composition with Circles. Rhythmic, lyrical and optical, Riley intuitively formulates a field of repeating and overlapping circles within a rectangular frame. The circles are of equal size in black on a white sheet and halved at the frame’s edges. This minimalist exercise leads to a surprisingly complex and kaleidoscopic image as the intersecting circles create an abundance of novel forms. As the eye dances across the picture plane, one feels the circles bubbling, as if new forms are constantly shifting, appearing and disappearing.
