The band initially comprised four members: Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme. They had written and recorded together for about three years before adopting the name 10cc in 1972. The lineup featured two songwriting teams: Stewart & Gouldman, known for their straightforward commercial pop, and Godley & Creme, who brought an experimental art-school sensibility with a cinematic style.

All members were skilled multi-instrumentalists, vocalists, writers, and producers, each capable of lead vocals.
